Record #001 · Pricing
NordVPN goes up 232% at renewal. Here is the arithmetic.
Not a complaint — a calculation. The advertised rate, the amount actually billed, the renewal rate, and the three-year total that follows from all three.
The two-year Basic plan costs $94.23 upfront for 27 months — $3.49 a month. At renewal it becomes $139.08 a year, or $11.59 a month: a 232% increase. Stretch that across 51 months — the discounted term plus two annual renewals — and the true average is $7.30 a month, roughly double the advertised figure.
Every VPN sale page is built around one number. For NordVPN's two-year Basic plan that number is $3.49 a month, usually printed next to a crossed-out figure and a percentage off. The number is real. It is also temporary, and it is not what you will be paying in year three.
This record exists to put the three numbers side by side, because no single page on the provider's own site does.
| Line item | Amount | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Advertised rate | $3.49 / mo | Basic, 2-year term, United States |
| Charged at checkout | $94.23 | 27 months (24 + 3 promotional) |
| Renewal, annual | $139.08 | Standard rate from month 28 |
| Renewal, per month | $11.59 | $139.08 ÷ 12 |
| Change at renewal | ▲ 232% | ($11.59 − $3.49) ÷ $3.49 |
| Monthly plan, for reference | $14.99 / mo | No commitment |
The gap, plotted
Two lines. The lower one is what you would pay if $3.49 held forever. The upper one is what you actually pay once the renewal rate starts at month 28. The shaded wedge between them is the difference — $194.40 by the end of year four and a quarter.
The part that is less dramatic than it sounds
It would be easy to stop there and call the whole thing a trick. It is not, quite. Compared with paying monthly — $14.99 — the two-year plan is still substantially cheaper over the same 51 months. $372.39 against $764.49 is a saving of 51%.
What is worth noticing is the distance between that 51% and the 77% the sales page implies. The advertised discount compares the promotional rate to the monthly rate. It does not compare your actual three-year spend to anything. Both numbers are true; only one of them describes your situation.
This is the pattern we record across all seven providers: the discount is real, and it is measured against the wrong baseline.

Three things to check before you buy
One: the renewal date, not the discount. Put the renewal date in your calendar the day you subscribe. The plan is priced to make the first term feel cheap and the second term feel like inertia. Cancelling before renewal is the only step that changes the total.
Two: where you buy. Purchases made through an app store sit outside the standard refund path. If you want the 30-day money-back window to apply, buy directly from the provider rather than from the App Store or Play Store.
Three: the refund window is the real trial. There is no free tier here. The 30-day money-back guarantee is the only way to test the service at no net cost — and it is a guarantee, not a trial, which means you have to ask for it.
